Why Cedar?

Cedar is medicine – Cedar has cleansing and healing properties,
both for physical and spiritual ailments.
It is used to brush away negativity and pain,
and carries hurt away.

Cedar is a symbol of strength - It’s rot-resistant, withstands storms, and stands tall seemingly forever. It teaches us the value of deep roots and resilience, and it reminds us of our inherent strength, challenging the ways racism seeks to diminish us.

Cedar brings us together – As the “tree of life,” cedar is sacred to nations everywhere
it grows. We gather in cedar bighouses, carve cedar totem poles, and weave
cedar bark. Cedar canoes connect us through trade and potlatches. It is part of
our ceremonies, and it keeps us warm when we burn it. It also grows stronger
and stands taller against the elements in groves - in community.
